Karen Goodman - Owner & Cambridge Shops Manager

Karen Goodman - Owner & Cambridge Shops Manager

A bit about me:
I am a Pro Tour Stringer (PTS) and a Master of Racket Sports (badminton and squash). 2019 was my 4th year at the Australian Open for Yonex, 7th year at Roland Garros for Babolat and my 17th year in the Wimbledon stringing team. I am proud to be the only person in the world to have been part of 3 Grand Slam Stringing Teams in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 and the only female stringer on each of those 12 occasions.

Sport/level:
I'll have a go at anything but generally stick to the racket sports, more commonly tennis and squash (although I'm known to have had big family battles at table tennis over the years!!). I play club tennis at Ely Tennis Club and vets county tennis for Cambridgeshire. I also enjoy playing club squash for Ely Squash and Leisure.

Best shot:
(Wait for it...) the 'drive-volley-drop-shot' that hits the frame and dribbles over the net to make it an un-returnable winner! Love it! Seriously, I've got a mean drop shot, when it is on form!!

Hobbies:
My main hobby is building things in the garden - hen house, bottle shed, compost heaps, etc. - hours of happy fun!

What you don't know about me is:
I climbed to the top of Mount Kenya (Point Lenana) - fabulous sense of acheivement.

Favourite inspiration:
It has to be Kim Clijsters and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga even though both have retired - they are such a friendly people, happy to have a chat, very down to earth. I love watching Gael Monfils too.

Mark Goodman - Owner & 'Office Boy'

Mark Goodman - Owner & 'Office Boy'

A bit about me:
Having spent 21 years in IT (yes I did use punched cards and paper tape years before PCs were thought of!), Karen and I decided to change direction and started Top Spin Tennis in 2003 and we haven't ever regretted that decision! I am a Master Racket Technician (MRT) and Master of Racket Sports (badminton and squash) and have strung at many tournaments around the world. I have strung at the Yonex All England Badminton Championships for over 15 years consecutively but the highlight (so far!) has been stringing at two Olympic Games - London and Rio (both tennis) and being Head Stringer at the London Paralympics. Also, 4 years stringing at the Australian Open and 3 years at Wimbledon come pretty high up! I have been creating the ERSA International badminton qualifications and am the ERSA badminton manager. If you are still reading this - thanks! I hope you get the flavour that Top Spin Tennis is a 'people' business and we all work very hard to have very happy repeat customers!

Sport/level:
My only 'effective' sport is badminton - I gained around 75 caps for Bedfordshire before representing Suffolk at Masters level. I played the All England Masters a couple of times but sadly a dodgy hip stopped all this, - happily, a new hip replacement in 2018 has allowed me to get back on the court - very rusty and slow!

Best shot:
My best shot was always the 'jump-drop-shot' or deceptive flick - love it!

Hobbies:
Whilst I like top flight rallying, I still love to watch the Irish Rally Championships with 'hairy' rear wheel driven Escorts and Sunbeams. I'm a huge fan of Rick Wakeman and rock music in general - Planet Rock is a regular at home!

What you don't know about me is:
In my youth (ok, so it was a long time ago!), I played the drums in lots of local bands and nearly got a professional contract at the age of 16. I've always loved fast things - I used to rally, having far more success at Road Rallying during the 80s and 90s and probably more success at navigating rather than driving.

Favourite inspiration:
I have loads of sporting greats - I have always admired Leyton Hewitt for never giving up... ever! His followers always liven up the crowd! I love watching single-handed backhands - Gonzales was a favourite but having watched Stan that has to be up there.

Sarah Bloomfield - Stringer & Cambridge Sales Team & 'Office Girl'

Sarah Bloomfield - Stringer & Cambridge Sales Team & 'Office Girl'

Sport/level:
Tennis dominated my childhood until I went to university. It was there that I decided a change would be good, so I picked up lacrosse for the majority of my uni life. Can't stay off a tennis court for long though and am now back playing again.

Best shot:
It was always my backhand but after going for three years without playing (which I don't recommend), getting the ball back over the net is a challenge. I'm sure it will come back to me soon though! In lacrosse I played straight attack for Leeds Beckett University 1st team.

Hobbies:
I am a bit of a foody - I love cooking, baking and eating out (although I am vegetarian!)

What you don't know about me is:
I'm a qualified scuba diver!

What you don't know about me is:
I did 8 years of Salsa Dancing - I'm waiting for my call up for 'Strictly'.  I also used to play Xbox (Fifa) for money... I made a lot of dollars but was too young (11 years old) to accept the invitation to Las Vegas.
